===============================================================

Small businesses, and especially minority- and women-owned businesses (MBEs and WBEs), are key components of regional and state economic development. MBEs and WBEs create jobs; spur reinvestment in lower-income communities; are a source of tax revenue, often in cash-strapped jurisdictions; and facilitate inter-generational wealth transfers. That is why we have created InBiz, the Inclusive Business Initiative – http://www.insightcced.org/index.php/insight-communities/inbiz.

Business Opportunities at DHS

Congress of the United States

House of Representatives

Washington, D.C. 20515

June 19, 2008

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Committee on Homeland Security, I am pleased to present the June 2008 edition of our e-publication, Business Opportunities at DHS.  In this edition of the newsletter, you will find information on future opportunities with the Department, a listing of upcoming events, and an article on the statutorily mandated role of the Department’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU).

Speaking of small and disadvantaged business utilization, in May, the Committee released a report detailing the findings of its investigation into lax practices used by the Department to meet its contracting goals for small, minority and disadvantaged businesses. The report contains recommendations designed to facilitate increased participation by a wider range of firms in the small, minority and disadvantaged business community.  You can read the report by clicking here: “Small, Minority, and Disadvantaged Business in the Department of Homeland Security—Selected Aspects, FY 2007.”

Our monthly e-publication, Business Opportunities at DHS, should serve as a solid resource for you and your constituents.  You can retrieve this month’s newsletter by visiting: http://homeland.house.gov/SiteDocuments/june2008.pdf

Do not hesitate to contact us at DHSBizOps@mail.house.gov if we can be of assistance to you.
