FREE MAGIC Summer Day Camp for High School Girls

Good morning!! This is to inform you about a WONDERFUL and first time FREE, summer day camp – MAGIC (Mentoring a Girl in Construction) being offered June 18th – June 22nd targeting young women who are enrolled a Shawnee County and surrounding area high school. This camp is sponsored by the YWCA Topeka, Career Assistance Network where I serve as the Director and the Topeka Chapter 142 of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). The chapter is comprised of a diverse group of women in professional and technical careers in the construction field, including women business owners.

This is a workforce development event as women are under-represented in this field and are very capable of working in high-paying careers. So, the MAGIC Camp is designed to offer high school girls the opportunity to learn about educational opportunities and the countless avenues of employment available to women in the construction industry and to engage these young women via hands-on training in basic construction skills. This opportunity to gain marketable skills and to experience the exhilaration of successfully performing difficult tasks builds self-confidence and boosts self-image and leadership skills while learning about non-traditional career opportunities for women.

Cost: The MAGIC Camp experience is free to the registered campers, thanks to the generous donations of the local construction industry, NAWIC, YWCA C.A.N., USD 501, community partners and individual donors. All participating campers will receive a free camp T-shirt. Parents and girls may enroll online at We are striving to enroll 24 diverse girls to take advantage of this opportunity, as we plan to make this camp an annual event.

This camp is currently beiing hosted in Kansas City, MO by the Associated General Constructors of Kansas – this is their 2nd year and they had to turn girls away. I am certain with your efforts and the efforts of everyone involved, we can register girls and make this camp a HUGE success. Please take time to share with your colleagues, associates, co-workers, family, church, and any group you are affiliated with. We do not want to cancel the camp due to lack of enrollment.
